Potholders are available in many colors and shapes which give them an appeal for decorating kitchens, but they also serve a practical purpose while cooking. When you are talking about vintage crochet potholders, the shift may be more towards decoration as a way to preserve these beautiful items. Popular from the late 1940’s until about 1960, crochet potholders had an intricate and sometimes delicate appearance. Finding one of these gems in good condition is like hitting a gold mine. The task isn’t always easy and may take some scrounging around thrift shops, auctions and estate sales.
Once you get your hands on some vintage crochet potholders, you will be hooked. The potholders are full of American history and many fond family memories. Crochet dresses, bloomers and floral potholders became popular in the late 1940’s after the war was over. Men fighting in war came home with the ambition to fix things around the home. At the same time, the woman of the house did her part by sprucing up the decorations. This included making crochet potholders.
It’s fun to learn about this little-known part of crochet history. The great part about these cute potholders is there are patterns available to continue the tradition of having pretty potholders in the home. Check out some of Maggie Weldon’s designs at Maggiescrochet.com.
