Learn Basket Weave Stitches with Maggie

The Basket Weave stitch has many variations. The variations include different numbers of raised double crochet stitches and different sizes of blocks. Different variations may also include the use of different stitches like the triple crochet stitch or the half double crochet stitch. The size of the alternating raise double crochet blocks is determined by the number of raised double crochet stitches and the numbers of rows created.

I have seen the Basket Weave stitch used to cover a can to put a plant in and I have seen it used in dishcloths. There are several dishcloth patterns available at bestfreecrochet.com that incorporate the basket weave stitch including a pansy dishcloth that uses the basket weave stitch and a basket weave dishcloth. Find the pattern links at the end of this blog post!

At maggiescrochet.com there is an adorable bear sweater that is made with the Basket Weave stitch in the out of print book – Crochet for Bears to Wear.

When I was pregnant with my son Aaron, my mom bought a bear for the baby that looked exactly like the bear on the cover of this book. When my son was about three he named the bear Bardo. I have no idea where he came up with that name. He still has the bear. One day I will crochet the Basket Weave stitch sweater for the bear – perhaps when I retire.

This is one of my favorite crochet projects. I definitely want to make this one day.

In this video I show you how to do one version of the Basket Weave stitch. The pattern written below is the pattern for the repeat of the Basket Weave stitch. With the repeat pattern you will be able to use the instructions to create a small piece for a dishcloth or maybe a larger baby afghan or perhaps an adult size Afghan. This stitch would be great for making crochet potholders, hot pads, scarfs and more.

The possibilities are endless with crochet!
