Nathan Vincent, a full-time artist living in New York, has wowed us with his incredible and life-like designs. He uses crochet unlike anyone we’ve seen before- by crocheting sculptures!
Crochet seems like an unlikely medium for sculpture, and even an uncommon one for most artists. So the immediate question is: why does Vincent use crochet?
His artist statement explains it well. “Through the medium of crochet I have moved across ideas of gender permissions – and how societal constructs often dictate the roles we play – to larger and more universal ideas of vulnerability, power and control, surveillance, and technology.”
Vincent bends gender roles by applying more masculine themes to the (commonly thought feminine) art of crochet.

“Stick Em Up.” Vincent takes the ideas and objects commonly thought of as masculine, such as guns, and displays them in a new, more feminine medium to blend the distinct lines between gender roles.
It’s always the dad who uses the “Lawn Mower,” isn’t it?

What’s more manly than a “Locker Room“? A man who can crochet one.
It takes a creative mind to break free of typical mediums and bring these sculptures to life. But that’s half the fun. In an interview with the Huffington Post, Vincent said “Crochet allows me to make something out of nothing in a fairly simple way- one stitch at a time. I like the process of turning a material into an object you’d never imagine.”
You can see him in the exhibit ”Emerging to Established – A Group Show” at Krause Gallery in Manhattan until July 16th.
